How to Do It

Drop-off and pick-up can be busy, so it isn't always easy to have a long conversation with your child's teacher. Instead, try making small check-ins part of your routine.

Once a week, ask your child's teacher one specific question. You might ask what your child is enjoying, what skill they are practicing, how they are getting along with friends, or whether there is something you can reinforce at home.

You can also share something you noticed at home. Maybe your child has started using a new word, is talking about a classmate, is struggling with bedtime, or has become interested in a new topic. These small updates give teachers a better picture of your child.

Try these questions:

  • What is my child really enjoying right now?
  • What is something my child is doing well?
  • Is there a skill we could practice at home?
  • How is my child doing with friends?
  • Is there anything you're noticing that I should know about?
  • What is one thing my child talked about at school today?
