Young children often give short answers when asked about their day. “Fine.” “Good.” “I don't know.” This doesn't mean they aren't learning or having meaningful experiences. Sometimes they simply don't know how to explain everything that happened.
Talking with your child's teacher can help fill in the gaps. Try asking specific questions about your child's interests, friendships, learning, and behavior.
Questions you can ask:
- What has my child been interested in lately?
- Who does my child enjoy playing with?
- What is something new they are learning?
- Is there anything they are having trouble with?
- How does my child participate during group activities?
- What can we practice at home?
These questions can turn a quick check-in into a meaningful conversation and help you better understand your child's school experience.
