Helping Children Calm Down

Why This Matters

Young children feel strong emotions, and they often don’t yet have the tools to calm themselves. Co-regulation means an adult stays calm and helps a child calm down too. When adults manage their own emotions and model healthy coping, children learn how to handle frustration, stress, and disappointment over time. The goal isn’t to never feel upset — it’s to learn what to do with those feelings.

Kids are still learning how to name emotions, handle stress, and respond to challenges. They need adults to guide them. Co-regulation helps because:

  • Children borrow our calm before they can find their own.

  • Our reactions shape theirs. If we yell, they may get louder. If we stay calm, they can settle more easily.

  • Kids learn by watching us. What they see, they often imitate.

Co-regulation begins with adult self-regulation. When parents know their own triggers and use healthy coping strategies, it becomes easier to support children during tough moments.
