Prepare your child by talking positively about school and what they can expect. Read books about starting school, visit the school if possible, and answer questions honestly using simple, reassuring language.
At drop-off:
- Keep goodbyes short, warm, and consistent.
- Let your child know when you'll return and follow through.
- Resist the urge to sneak away, as this can make it harder for children to trust future goodbyes.
- Acknowledge your child's feelings by saying things like, "I know you're feeling nervous, and that's okay. Your teacher will take good care of you, and I'll see you after school."
Remember that tears at drop-off are common and don't necessarily mean a child will have a difficult day. Most children settle into classroom activities quickly with support from caring teachers and consistent routines at home.
