Common Goals

By the time children begin kindergarten, many are working toward being able to:

  • Say the sounds that letters make

  • Speak in complete sentences that others can understand

  • Follow directions with two or more steps

  • Compare objects (bigger/smaller, same/different)

  • Describe how objects are related (e.g., “The spoon goes with the bowl”)

  • Make simple predictions when listening to stories

  • Repeat familiar songs, poems, or nursery rhymes

Children develop these skills at different rates, and growth often happens through play, reading together, singing, and daily conversations.

How Families Can Support Language & Pre-Literacy at Home

You can support your child’s development by:

  • Talking about what you’re doing throughout the day

  • Reading together and asking simple questions about stories

  • Singing songs and reciting rhymes

  • Playing games that involve following directions

  • Encouraging your child to describe objects, actions, and feelings

Small, everyday interactions make a big difference.
