Common Goals

Children approaching kindergarten often work on skills such as:

  • Running, climbing, and moving with agility

  • Throwing and catching a ball

  • Hopping on one leg

  • Jumping with legs together

  • Standing on one leg for 5 seconds without losing balance

  • Holding a pencil or crayon correctly

  • Cutting along a line with scissors

  • Using glue, tearing paper, or placing pegs on a board

  • Determining their dominant hand

  • Moving rhythmically to music

  • Sitting at a desk with good posture

  • Sitting on the floor with legs crossed without falling over

Children develop these skills at different rates, and everyday play can naturally strengthen coordination and body control.

How Families Can Support Motor Skills at Home

You can support your child’s motor development by:

  • Playing active games like hopscotch, catch, or obstacle courses

  • Encouraging drawing, coloring, cutting, and gluing activities

  • Dancing to music or playing rhythm games

  • Practicing balance activities like standing on one leg or walking along a line

  • Offering opportunities for climbing, running, and playground play
