Children communicate in many different ways. A question, a gesture, a sound, a facial expression, or showing an adult a toy can all be an invitation to interact. When adults notice and respond, children learn that their communication matters.
Providers can model these interactions throughout the day and help families understand how easily they can continue them at home.
Ways providers can practice serve and return:
- Notice and respond to children’s words, sounds, gestures, and actions.
- Follow the child’s interests during play and conversation.
- Give children time to respond before moving on.
- Expand on what children say by adding words or details.
- Share examples with families so they can use the same approach at home.
