Spending Time Connecting

How to Do It

Spending time together gives children opportunities to communicate, play, share ideas, and build relationships with their parents and caregivers. This time does not need to involve a special outing or activity.

Even a few minutes of focused attention can provide an opportunity to connect. Try setting aside time to do something your child enjoys and allow them to help decide what you do together.

Ideas for connecting:

  • Read a book together.
  • Play a game or build with blocks.
  • Go for a walk and talk about what you see.
  • Cook or prepare a snack together.
  • Draw, color, or create something.
  • Listen to music and sing together.
  • Talk during bedtime or another daily routine.
  • Let your child show you something they are interested in.

During this time, try to minimize distractions when possible. Put away your phone, get involved in the activity, and give your child your attention.

Connection can also happen during everyday routines. A conversation in the car, helping with dinner, or talking before bed can become meaningful time together.

The focus is not on how much time you spend together, but on being present and engaged during the time you have.
