Starting the Conversation After School

How to Do It

After a busy day at school, children may not always be ready to answer, “How was your day?” with a long conversation. Some children need time to decompress, eat a snack, or simply be with you before they are ready to talk.

Instead of asking questions that can be answered with “good” or “fine,” try questions that invite your child to share more.

Try asking:

  • “What was the best part of your day?”
  • “What made you laugh today?”
  • “What was something new you learned?”
  • “Who did you play with?”
  • “Was there anything that felt tricky today?”
  • “If you could do one part of your day again, what would it be?”

Remember that conversation doesn't always have to happen face-to-face. Children may open up while coloring, playing, eating a snack, riding in the car, or getting ready for bed.

The goal isn't to get a full report about their day. The goal is to let your child know, “I am interested in your world, and I am here to listen.”
