What Are Independence Skills?

Independence skills are simple, everyday abilities children can practice now so they are more confident during the summer months.

These are not academic skills—they are life skills like:

  • Following simple directions
  • Cleaning up toys
  • Dressing themselves
  • Making simple choices
  • Asking for help

Key Independence Skills to Focus On

1. Following Simple Directions
Practice 1–2 step instructions like “put your toy away and sit on the rug.”
Builds: listening, memory

2. Clean-Up Routine
Encourage children to put away materials after play.
Builds: responsibility, organization

3. Dressing Skills
Practice putting on shoes, jackets, or simple clothing items.
Builds: self-help skills

4. Choice-Making
Offer simple choices (“red crayon or blue crayon?”).
Builds: decision-making, confidence

5. Asking for Help
Teach simple phrases like “help please” or “I need help.”
Builds: communication, self-advocacy

6. Waiting and Taking Turns
Use games and group activities to practice patience.
Builds: self-regulation, social skills

Easy Ways to Reinforce in the Classroom Before Summer

  • Give children small helper jobs
  • Practice packing up belongings independently
  • Encourage verbal requests instead of anticipating needs
