Communication between parents and children happens throughout the day, not just during intentional “learning” moments. As a provider, you can help families recognize opportunities to talk, listen, and respond to their child during routines they already have.
Sharing specific examples from the classroom can also give parents ideas for continuing communication at home. When families know what their child is talking about, interested in, or working on, they have an easy place to start.
Ways providers can support families:
- Share simple conversation starters parents can use after school.
- Encourage open-ended questions and giving children time to respond.
- Share specific examples of how the child is communicating at school.
- Encourage conversation during meals, car rides, bath time, and bedtime.
- Remind families that everyday interactions are opportunities to build language and connection.
