Repeated behaviors are often a sign that something isn’t working for the child yet. Changing the adult response or environment is often more effective than repeating the same correction.
Look for Patterns
Ask:
- When does this happen?
- Where does it happen?
- Who is involved?
- What happens right before and after?
Shift the Approach
Instead of repeating the same response:
- Adjust the environment
- Change timing or expectations
- Teach a replacement skill
- Provide more support before the behavior occurs
Consistency Across Adults
- Use similar language and expectations
- Share strategies as a team
- Avoid mixed responses that confuse children
