Why This Matters

Repeated behaviors are often a sign that something isn’t working for the child yet. Changing the adult response or environment is often more effective than repeating the same correction.

Look for Patterns

Ask:

  • When does this happen?
  • Where does it happen?
  • Who is involved?
  • What happens right before and after?

Shift the Approach

Instead of repeating the same response:

  • Adjust the environment
  • Change timing or expectations
  • Teach a replacement skill
  • Provide more support before the behavior occurs

Consistency Across Adults

  • Use similar language and expectations
  • Share strategies as a team
  • Avoid mixed responses that confuse children
