The Trouble with Transitions: Making Classroom Changes Easier

Here's What To Do

Instead of waiting until transition time becomes a struggle, build simple supports into your daily routine.

  • Give a warning. Let children know when an activity will end. Try, "In five minutes, we'll clean up and get ready for lunch."

  • Use songs or signals. A cleanup song, bell, or familiar phrase can help children recognize when it's time to switch activities.

  • Keep directions short. Give one or two clear steps at a time, such as, "Put your blocks in the bin, then come to the carpet."

  • Give children a job. Let them carry a book, collect supplies, or help check that an area is clean.

  • Keep children engaged. Reduce long waits by preparing materials and having the next activity ready before children arrive.

Try This Tip!

Turn cleanup into a game! Say, "Can we put all the red blocks away before the song ends?" or invite children to find five toys that belong in the bin. Keep it fun, and remember that some children may need extra time or individual reminders.
